You have probably heard the expression, "good relationships take work" but you may not know exactly what that means. You may feel as though you are working hard but you're still struggling and feeling more unhappy than you are happy. The cool thing about couples therapy is that you don't have to figure this out on your own.
There is a good chance that frustration and conflict are overshadowing all that is good in your relationship. I counsel couples using Imago Relationship Therapy, the method featured in the book, "Getting the Love You Want." Using Imago Therapy, I will teach you to communicate with your partner without blame and criticism. In a safe, non-judgmental environment, I will help you work through the problems that have been keeping you from feeling connected with each other. I will teach you to share your feelings in a way that creates understanding and empathy.
What to expect in the first session
Typically I use the first session to get to know you and your partner and to learn more about your goals for therapy. I will assess whether I can be of assistance in your relationship goals. I will show you how I work and demonstrate the therapeutic model I use. This will help you decide if you want to work with me. The first session does not require any commitment from you to continue therapy with me.
Follow-up sessions typically take 90 minutes. If you decide to work with me, we will work together to determine the schedule that works best for you and your needs. For example, some couples want a weekly 90 minute session, while others want sessions every other week. And some couples prefer half-day intensive sessions.
The number of sessions will depend on your goals and your specific circumstance. My goal is to teach you new ways to communicate and connect with each other so you will continue to strengthen your relationship long after therapy has been completed.
